Track of the Day: Psychedelic Porn Crumpets – Mr. Prism

One of Western Australia’s finest exports – of which there are a fair few – Psychedelic Porn Crumpets last week returned with a bang, unleashing ‘Mr. Prism’, their first release of 2020.

The track is semi-autobiographical; it follows Mr. Prism, a character frontman Jack McEwan calls his “sickly fun-fuelled fiend of an alter-ego”. Mr. Prism’s capers, however, reflect the events of early 2020, when McEwan was struck by a bout of pneumonia at the end the band’s last tour. Whilst not the most conventional recovery route, McEwan’s choice to turn a struggle with illness into such a superb tune has become a blessing in disguise for the band’s fans.

A whirlwind of a song from start to finish, ‘Mr. Prism’ gives the listener no time to come up for air. Distorted guitars and chaotic rhythms intertwine perfectly to give the track a blistering energy; accompanied by McEwan’s captivating storytelling, this is a trademark Porn Crumpets tune, and one for the books.

‘Mr. Prism’ is the first tease the band have given of a potential upcoming LP. Though their last album ‘And Now For The Whatchamacallit’ was only released a little over a year ago, the band aren’t known for long hiatuses, so we can only hope there’s more to come before long.
