Gorillaz are no strangers to star-studded collaborations. 2017’s Humanz was the first album to send Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett’s cartoon musicians into the world of features, with the likes of Mavis Staples, Kali Uchis and De La Soul all making appearances. Now, the band have ventured back into this avenue, with upcoming album Song Machine boasting a feature on every track.
Yesterday, Gorillaz shared a new instalment to the Song Machine with possibly the most exciting of features yet, having managed to secure The Cure’s Robert Smith. An indie kid’s dream, the band have teamed up with Smith for ‘Strange Timez’.
You would never guess that ‘Strange Timez’ was brought to life through email files sent between Damon Albarn and Robert Smith. Perfectly produced as usual, ‘Strange Timez’ blends the best of both Gorillaz and The Cure, with Smith’s lyrics and vocals signing off the track perfectly. The track is accompanied by a characteristically weird and wonderful video once again masterminded by Jamie Hewlett.
Alongside the track, Gorillaz have finally shared full details of Song Machine’s full release. Whilst fans have been left guessing for the many (many) months the band have teasing us, it has now been announced that the album will drop next month. The tracklist packs an almighty punch, with collaborations from the likes of Elton John, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Skepta. Even having heard less than half of the album so far, we have a feeling Song Machine will be one of our albums of the year.
